Abstract: The best writing of Benjamin Franklin is founded in his own autobiography. This essay reveals the striking logic sequence of the approaches mentioned in the prose How I Taught Myself to Write from autobiography, and concludes the enlightenment for vast teachers when they lecture English writing.

Key words: How I Taught Myself to Write; logic sequence; enlightenment for teaching

Ⅰ. Introduction

A noted polymath, “the first American” Benjamin Franklin, was a leading author, printer, political theorist, scientist, musician, inventor, satirist, civic activist, statesman and diplomat. As an author, Franklin had an incomparable talent for writing with the power of expression, simplicity, persuasion and subtle humor. In the prose How I Taught Myself to Write, Benjamin Franklin puts forward four approaches to enhancing writing skills in three aspects( vocabulary, wording and reasoning). It is plain to readers that the author throughout sticks to one specific reasoning pattern," proposing a method----finding out his problems----formulating a supplementary solution", which is definitely a virtuous circle. That is to say, all of the methods are pregnant with some problems, while all of the further improvements are deprived from the settlement of problems.

Ⅱ. Logic Sequence of the Approaches in How I Taught Myself to Write

The following part is the elaborate analysis about how the author developes this essay.
At the beginning, encouraged by the writing impulse, the narrator embarked on imitating the originals in SPECTATOR. He " took some of the papers, made short hints of the sentiments, laid them by a few days and then, without looking at the book, tried to complete the papers again". It was a tough but fruitful challenge because in the process of imitation, the narrator found his biggest adversity laying in limited vocabulary and selecting accurate words.
Then, the narrator was determined to rewrite the tales in the form of verses because the special requirements in verse "for words of the same import, but of different length, to suit the measure, or of different sound of the rhyme", would have pushed him to search for variety and veracity and finally made him master word choice.
New problems emerged after old ones were solved----the narrator detected his shortcomings in logic reasoning. Thus, he sometimes mixed up his collection of hints into confusion and after several weeks endeavored to put them into the best order by writing a new story, "this was to teach me method in the arrangements of thoughts", as the narrator described. More luckily, not only the reasoning ability was trained, sometimes but also some more creative and interesting tales were produced unexpectedly.
Finally, the last step was to practice and practice, just as the saying "Practice makes perfect" goes. The narrator suggested all readers, by using his real experience, avoiding trivial matters in daily life as much as possible and seized the precious time to industrious work.
Seeing from the whole prose, it follows the author’s writing experience and every phase is logically interlinked with each other and fuse into the integrity.
